Kallista - A Success Story

On 1 November 2008 a new journey began - this time a tiny redneck wallaby joey that Tasha picked up on the RSPCA ambulance at Greenbank after her mum was killed on the road.  Fortunately the joey had survived the accident unscathed and was in really good condition.  She weighed 270 grams and fed well and started to gain weight immediately.  I named her Kallista and hopefully you will enjoy being able to follow her journey.

A New Year Begins

Firstly, as you will see from the photos I have added, Kallista is growing up and has finally grown a light covering of quite dark fur.  I am sure she will get lighter as she grows some more.  She is doing extremely well and has certainly been one of the easiest wallabies that I have ever looked after.

She is just starting to get more curious about the world outside of her basket and only this morning hopped out on to the floor and actually managed to stand without falling over.  I expect her to start doing this more often over the next few days and become more confident but she still has a long way to go before she is actually hopping around.  It is a slow process which you can't rush.  This stage is the most demanding as you actually can't leave her for long periods as you worry about her getting out and not being able to get back in her bed and I would hate to think she would be sitting stressed out while I went out for a few hours.  So even when we had a trip to the beach on a really hot New Year's Eve we had to take Kallista along.  She hung in her bag in the shade of a tree  at the water's edge and was happy, even posing for a couple of photos on the beach chair after her feed.
